About Us

The Indigenous World Covered Through Digital & Broadcast Journalism

IndiJ Public Media was incorporated in November 2020 as a nonprofit organization and received its 501(c)(3) designation from the IRS in August 2021. We are governed by a board of directors with aspirations as a nonprofit to advance our influence in the news media landscape. IndiJ Public Media was formed initially to serve as the owner and fiscal sponsor of ICT, formerly Indian Country Today, LLC, which has a long history of serving Indigenous communities with news and information. And IndiJ Public Media strives to build on that strong history and tradition by creating a new model for the news media industry based on Indigenous values.

We are creating a different kind of news media company that puts coverage of people and their issues ahead of profits. The digital era transformed the way people consume news and affected the business model of advertising-supported news. Our nonprofit organization sustains itself through philanthropic sources — members, donors, foundations, and supporters and offers a variety of advertising, sponsorship, and underwriting opportunities.

The name IndiJ (pronounced In-DIDGE) is shorthand for Indigenous Journalism. IndiJ Public Media exists because a group of Indigenous journalists — rarely seeing our communities reflected in mainstream news coverage — wanted to demonstrate that a news organization can succeed in doing so. The future is bright. The future of media is Indigenous.

ICT is a spacious channel that serves Indigenous communities with news, entertainment, and opinion.

Our Board of Directors

Our board of seven members has expertise in media to enable continued development and expansion. The three-committee structure consists of a Governance Committee (recruitment, policies, standards), Internal Committee (executive, personnel, negotiation), and External Committee (public outreach, marketing, fundraising) to enable strategic focus on areas of growth.

Our Locations

Our news bureau offices are the result of partnerships with forward-thinking organizations and are staffed by a bureau chief, a reporter, and a student intern. Over the next several years, IndiJ Public Media plans to expand our footprint by adding bureaus across the country. This will increase the amount and quality of Indigenous coverage, give readers and viewers in the region the kind of insightful stories about Indigenous communities that mainstream news outlets often miss, and provide journalism students with internship opportunities leading to careers in journalism.
